洗濯物に迫り来る煙 Smoke threatening the laundry

私たちの鼻はレモンの香りの石けんと洗濯物（木の洗い桶、洗濯板、水絞り機）を嗅ぎつけた。いくらかの甘さが広がり（レモン・ボンボン、モファット・トフィー、オッドフェローズ）、その後にスモーク、石炭庫、そして灰をまぶしたクリーミーなヤギのチーズがやって来た。加水すると、美味しそうでスパイシーな香りが強調された – 唐辛子とタマネギのジャム、ハムバグ・キャンディ、シナモンロール、豚バラ肉の五香粉煮込み。しかし味は、最初から大きくてスモーキーだった – 木材の灰、タール、石炭酸。ごくわずかの木材（カシワ、古くてタールまみれの船の板材）があり、甘さ（エディンバラ・ロック）を伴ったが、これは時としてさらに深くて黒っぽかった（イチジクのシロップ、リコリス、シャーベット・ファウンテン、甘酸っぱい、醤油, チャーシュー）。 Our noses detected laundry (wooden tubs, washboards, mangles) with lemon soap; some sweetness developed (lemon bonbons, Moffat toffees, Oddfellows) while smoke, coal bunkers and creamy goat’s cheese rolled in ash arrived later. Water highlighted the savoury, spicy notes – chilli onion jam, humbugs, cinnamon swirls and pork belly cooked with five-spice. The palate however, was big and smoky from the word go – wood ash, tar and carbolic; quite a bit of wood (sweet oak, old tarry ship’s timbers) with sweetness (Edinburgh Rock) that was sometimes deeper and darker (syrup of figs, liquorice, sherbet fountains, sweet and sour, soy sauce, char sui).
